Induction heating
Induction heating heats conductive and ferromagnetic materials without contact, by generating eddy currents in the workpiece through a magnetic field. This category holds the components for it: generators, controllers, heating heads, inductor holders, optical pyrometers, cooling systems and accessories. The process is used for hardening, brazing, annealing and forming.
Frequently Asked Questions
In induction heating, alternating current in a coil creates an alternating magnetic field. This induces eddy currents in the electrically conductive workpiece, generating heat directly inside the material. In ferromagnetic materials, magnetic losses also contribute to heating. This allows heat to be applied quickly, precisely and without contact.
An induction heating system mainly consists of a generator and an inductor. The generator provides the required alternating current, while the inductor couples the magnetic field into the workpiece. Depending on the application, cooling, temperature measurement and process control can also be included.
Induction heating is used for applications such as hardening, tempering, annealing, soft soldering, brazing and heating before forming. Because the heat is generated directly in the workpiece, specific areas of a component can also be heated quickly and reproducibly.
The key factors are the material, geometry and mass of the workpiece, the area to be heated, the target temperature and the required cycle time. These determine the necessary generator power, suitable frequency range and inductor geometry. Temperature control can also be used to ensure reproducible processes.
Induction heating is suitable for electrically conductive materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminium, copper and brass. Ferromagnetic materials such as steel can be heated particularly efficiently. Electrically non-conductive materials cannot be heated directly by induction.
