Anything joined by luer lock can be combined as long as male and female match. Cartridges, pistons and adapters, by contrast, are tied to the particular cartridge size.
That depends on the medium and on the number of cycles. A fixed interval beats a visual check, because residues and ageing seals shift the shot size gradually, long before anything becomes visible.
What matters is the fitting and the container size. Luer lock is the standard that brings needle, syringe and adapter together. If the part number from an existing set-up is missing, the unit, the medium and the cartridge size are enough to identify it.
The inner diameter of the needle sets the flow resistance. A different geometry therefore changes the amount dispensed even though nothing was adjusted on the unit. This is why the needle in use belongs in the process documentation.
