Each medium stays in its own syringe and the change is made by unplugging rather than by cleaning. That saves the flushing time and prevents cross contamination.
Both work on the same principle, compressed air acts on a piston and the piston on the medium. The syringe is the smaller unit and fits when the amount is small, the medium expensive or the bench set up for several media. Anyone dispensing through a full shift runs more smoothly with a cartridge.
Piston, end caps and the air adapter come prepared as a matched set. That rules out one failure mode, namely a piston that jams in the barrel or lets air pass.
