What counts is the outer diameter of the tubing in its stretched state, not the nominal diameter. Soft materials need a wide bearing surface, otherwise the clamp cuts in.
Without pressure it holds by itself. Under pressure it slowly works its way off the fitting. Between the first give and coming off, the joint leaks without any medium escaping: only pressure is lost, and the result shows as an undersized shot.
